Hi Weavers!
Art + weaving is where things start to get really exciting. 🎨🧶
If you’ve ever felt the pull to go beyond just “making fabric” and into creating something more expressive, textured, and uniquely you - this is it.
Art cloth opens the door to playful colour choices, interesting yarns, and techniques that let your creativity take the lead.
In today’s email, I’ve gathered together some of my favourite tutorials and classes to help you explore this side of weaving.
Whether you’re just getting curious or ready to dive in a little deeper, these resources and ideas will be your launching pad:
What Is Art Cloth?
Surface Embroidery on Weft Floats...
Freestyle Tapestry
- Clasped Weft (so many options!)
Clasped Weft
- Beads - yes there is bead weaving but you can also incorporate beads into your weaving, like I did in this Danish Medallions class.
- Shibori - If you haven't heard of this Japanese technique, it is usually done by hand stitching but can also be woven. You weave patterns into your cloth, pull up all the slack and then dye the cloth. When you open it up, the pattern is revealed!
If you're a member of the Online Weaving School, the Japanese Journey Masterclass covers this technique in detail. There is also a great book on the topic - Woven Shibori by Catharine Ellis.
- Dyeing - the ultimate "art cloth" hack? I think so! Dyeing your yarn or finished woven pieces allows the weaver to produce truly unique and artistic pieces.
My online class, the Colour Pooling Scarf is a great way to get started dyeing while also producing a finished project.
I also have an excellent, in depth class that will teach you how to dye yarn using natural dyes. You will be amazed at the colours you can achieve from natural sources, and besides, it could just be the best fun you'll ever have 😆
Until next time...
Happy Weaving!
