It's just a stick but...

Hi Weavers!

I think the day I ordered my first pick up stick was the day that I realised my rigid heddle loom was more than I ever thought it could be.

Who would have thought that a humble, flat and smooth stick could be the instigator of so much creative exploration?

Like any beginner rigid heddle weaver, I was working my way through plain weave projects, exploring yarn, colour and sett.

Then I bought Jane Patrick's The Weaver's Idea Book and learned that pick up sticks were a thing.

I warped a long sampler with some inexpensive yarn, opened the book and went for it!

I learned weft floats, warp floats, pick up behind the heddle, simple twill, and so much more. I didn't understand what I was doing at the time but it sure was fun! One stick wasn't enough, so I purchased more.

That exploration led me on to more twills, pick up overshot, and the wonderful krokbragd.โ€‹

As I continued to use my pick up sticks (and started using heddle rods as well) something clicked in my brain and I had a weaving epiphany.

What I was actually doing was creating more shafts! My 2 shaft loom had become a 3, 4, 5, 6 and beyond shaft loom. This realisation was mind blowing and very, very exciting ๐Ÿคฉ
