The rigid heddle loom is often celebrated as a beginner-friendly weaving tool, but don’t let its simplicity fool you - it’s a versatile loom capable of producing intricate and advanced designs.
I spend a lot of time talking about beginner rigid heddle weaving but there are many more advanced RH weavers out there too.
Sure, it takes a little more work and a good dose of curiosity to weave at a more advanced level, but for the weavers who don't desire upgrading to a table loom or floor loom, additional effort is well worth the investment.
What do I mean by more advanced RH weaving? Here are just a few examples:
Pick Up Sticks - although using a pick up stick is easy to learn and operate, it's what the pick up stick is actually doing that makes it a more advanced technique.
More Heddles - adding one or more additional heddle really opens up the possibilities with RH weaving. Your patterning possibilities are greatly increased, you can double your sett easily, double your width... and even weave a tube! 😀
Hand/Finger Manipulation - these techniques are a great way to achieve lace and more open work.
Clasped Weft - Interlinking your weft yarns allows you to weave truly unique and beautiful designs. Start with 2 linking wefts and level up to 3 wefts and even 4 wefts!
