Before you start a new project, there’s usually that little moment where you think, “Do I really need to calculate this… or can I just start?”
I completely understand the temptation to dive straight in and acknowledge that there are times where detailed calculations are not necessary. I even have a member's only class that shows you how to do your calculations in reverse (think weave now, numbers later 😆)
But a little time spent figuring things out beforehand can save so much frustration later. Things like running out of yarn part way through the warp, realising your finished piece is going to be way shorter than you imagined or not having adequate weft yarn to complete the project.
A lot of people tell me they’re put off by calculations because they think you need to be “good at maths” to weave properly. You really don’t.
We’re talking very basic stuff here - simple measurements, a bit of multiplying, and writing numbers down so your brain doesn’t have to hold onto them. That’s it.
Calculating isn’t about turning weaving into a numbers game, it’s just a gentle way of giving your project a good start so you can relax and enjoy the weaving once you’re at the loom.

And this online calculator is super handy for quick and easy calculations - just punch in some basic numbers and let the calculator do the rest.
