The Weekend Edition - Shuttle Showdown!

Hi Weavers!

This week I’ve been weaving with both an open-bottom and a closed-bottom boat shuttle—and it got me thinking: do you know which one’s best for your loom and projects?

In my new blog post (with photos and a video demo), I walk you through the key differences between the two, what to look for when choosing, and when I personally reach for each one:

Open v's Closed Boat Shuttle...

And if you're a rigid heddle weaver who is curious about whether a boat shuttle could be valuable to you, check out this resource 😉

You will also find me being a bit silly on Youtube this week:

MY NEXT CHALLENGE PROJECT

I've started on a new project that I'm pretty excited about! I plan to sew a vintage style overcoat (pattern from here) for my youngest daughter.

So, of course I am also weaving the fabric! I've just started making the warp on my warping board and will weave the plain weave fabric on my Louet David.

The warp is a total of 7 yards and I'll be weaving at a width of around 33".

I'm using 2 colours of Maurice Brassard 8/2 cotton for the warp (framboise and brique).

I'm quite apprehensive about:

  1. Following a vintage pattern successfully (they lack detail!)
  2. Sewing and reinforcing smaller pieces of handwoven fabric (and attaching a full lining)
  3. Buttonholes 🫣

I'll be documenting this project along the way to share on Youtube 😉
