Weaving is typically known for slow and steady rather than a "quick win".
But there are times for all of us where life is super busy and we think "I just want to weave something in a weekend and have it done".
Personally, I love a more challenging project but does that mean that I want every single project to take hours in the planning, setting up and then weaving? Not at all!
Those “quick wins” have their own special place in the creative life. They can give you a much needed boost at the right time.
There’s a simple joy in winding a short warp, sitting down for a few hours between chores, work or family life, and actually finishing something you can hold in your hands by Sunday evening. These little projects remind us that weaving doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes it can be light, fun, and wonderfully achievable.
So what actually makes a weaving project fast?
1. Plain weave = speed. Plain weave is both soothing and efficient. No complicated weaving sequences or challenging set ups. Just a beautiful, rhythmic over-under rhythm that lets your hands relax and your mind unwind.
2. Thicker yarn gives instant gratification. Chunkier yarns build cloth quickly and give that satisfying “look how much I’ve done!” feeling. They’re perfect for weekends when time (and brain space) is limited. The added bonus is a different and generous texture to your cloth!
3. Simple design choices. Minimal colour changes, straightforward stripes, or a single texture focus means fewer interruptions and more weaving momentum. Simple does not have to be boring, it can be very beautiful!
4. Smaller, purposeful projects. Not every project needs to be a long warp or a big commitment. Things like:
mug rugs
washcloths
simple scarves
a quick cowl
small table mats
narrow bands These are all wonderful candidates for a weekend weave.
If you’re feeling the itch for something quick and satisfying, here are a few ideas you can start today:
Whether you’re easing back into creativity after a busy week or just craving the feeling of finishing something beautiful, a weekend project can be the perfect little reset and confidence builder.
Left - Just some of the beautiful roses from our garden. Top right - My husband managed to catch this baby rabbit so he could bring it to the house and show me (he let it go again!) Bottom right - My husband says I'm obsessed with clouds and I think he might be right ☁️ ❤️
I just love teaching hemstitch. Not just because it's beautiful (that goes without saying!) but also for the "aha!" moment so many students experience when learning it.
It might seem a little tricky to learn initially, but it's worth it. No need to memorise, just refer back to one of my free videos each time you need to 😊
